Coin Lithium Battery Safety

Protecting children from the dangers of small, coin-sized lithium button batteries

Coin lithium batteries can cause severe injuries when ingested.

Household electronics could pose an unknown risk to young children. Most small devices such as mini remote controls or car key fobs contain coin lithium batteries that can cause serious injury if swallowed.

Children aged 4 and under are at greatest risk from coin lithium batteries. When ingested, a coin lithium battery can become stuck in the child’s oesophagus. There may not be immediate symptoms. But a chemical reaction can cause the battery to burn through the tissue in two hours. Repair often requires multiple surgeries and ongoing medical care.

If you know or suspect that a child has swallowed a coin lithium battery, head to the emergency room immediately.

Protecting Families.

The Battery Controlled is a joint partnership between Energizer®, ACCC and Kidsafe to alert parents and carers to the hidden dangers of ingesting coin lithium batteries. This effort is committed to sharing life-saving information and providing easy steps that caregivers can take to prevent battery related injuries to children.
